Introduction of Professional Hydrocyclone Desilter

Hydrocyclone is made of an upper cylindrical section and a lower conical section. A vortex finder pipe protruding downward at the top of the upper cylindrical section that is a little bit below the tangential feed section . Fluid from centrifugal pump enters the tangential feed section of the hydrocyclone at high velocity on swirling motion creating a centrifugal force that accelerates the solids to the cone wall.

The solids and liquid mixture rotates rapidly while swirling downward the higher mass solids move toward the wall and exit the cone thru its apex while the lighter mass which are concentrated away from the wall towards the centerline are now forced to reverse direction swirling upward exiting the vortex finder. CSQ Desander and CNQ Desilter operate on exactly the same principle.

Although US Patent No.3,766,997 covering Mud Cleaner was issued on October 23, 1973 granted to J.K. Heilhecker and L.H. Robinson and assigned to Exxon Production Research Company, it was found invalid and efforts for re-issue was unsuccessful because of the existence of prior art filed at the British Patent Office by a German Inventor in the late 1800s.

Nowadays, mud cleaner used in oilfield means the equipment processing drilling mud. It is combined with desander cone and desilter cone as well as bottom shaker. It is called 2nd and 3rd phase solids control equipments.

Description of mud cleaner

A mud cleaner is a combination of desanders and/or desilters mounted over a shaker with a fine mesh screen. A mud is fed to the inlet of the hydrocyclone (desander and/or desilter) to separate particles and the underflow passes to the fine screen mesh where in particles larger than barite are discarded and thrown away. In most drilling operations, a mud cleaner is installed in its mud systems. It is usually located in a mud tank in the same location as with the desilters.

Process flow of mud cleaner

The weighted mud flows to the inlet head section of the desander and/or desilter entering the hydrocyclones for separation of particles. Mud leaving the underflow is further screened with fine mesh to separate larger particles allowing only barite size particles to pass through the screen returning and recovering then the clean mud.

Purpose of mud cleaner

The purpose of the mud cleaner is to remove drilled solids larger than barite. Solids larger than 74-105 micrometres can be removed by the mud cleaner before the viscosity builds up.

Clean fluid flow to desander compartment through desander cone discharge output. Then SB series centrifugal pump transfer drilling mud from desander compartment to desilter feed inlet.  Drilling fluid in desilter cone has same process principle and process as desander.

The processed mud will down to desilter compartment. This part drilling fluid is to be processed by decanter centrifuge. The particle in this department is mainly less than 12 microns.

How to make hydrocyclone desilter

Hydrocyclone desilters are mainly the same structure. Combine with hydrocyclones, steel frame, pipeline, hacking, and/or bottom shaker, pressure gauge. Some users prefer desilter without bottom shaker.

We need to welded steel frame with desilter feed inlet and discharge output line. The pedestal is a part of steel frame also. If no special requirement, the bottom shaker will be set over hacking.

To make desilter, the main issue is to weld parts together. And arrange hydrocyclones to be sequential as parallel or cylinder. The cones line can parallel to bottom shale shaker or perpendicular to shaker. Please find the following sketch for more info.

There are also 3″ or 2″ desilter cone. The hydrocyclones can be made of casting polyurethane, milling polyurethane, milling, mixed rubber, oil resisting rubber, PTEF, MC Nylon, high-chromium iron, high-tungsten casting iron, etc.

According to actual test on oilfield mud system, the casting polyurethane cones can be used over 2100 hours, and the biggest broken position is about 80mm away with cones bottom.

Brief Introduction of Hydrocyclone Deilter

Desilter is the third class equipment in solids control system, it is used to separate the solid particles whose diameter is 12~47?m from drilling fluid.

Desilter is designed by the theory of particle sedimentation. The separation medium-drilling fluid produces some pressure and speed when it passes the centrifugal pump, and flows into the hydrocyclone along the wall, the bigger solid particles along the wall of hydrocyclone sink spirally under the centrifugal force and gravity, and to be discharged from the bottom flow hole and fall on the under micromeshsieve for separation. The other mediums rise along the spiral of hydrocyclone, flow into the fourth class separation equipment-centrifuge for a further cleaning treatment from the overflow hole.
