Drilling fluid system is the typical 4 phase mud process system,including shale shaker, desander, desilter, centrifuge.The shale shaker is the first stage of solids control equipment in solids control system, which removes cuttings with diameter above 76μm from the drilling fluids brought up from the wells.Drilling mud desander is the second stage of solids control equipment in solids control system. It is mainly used to take away the solids with diameter ranging from 47 to 76 μm from the formerly treated fluids.Desilter is the third stage of solids control equipment in solids control system. Decanter centrifuge is the solids control equipment which used to separate the solids from volumes of liquid that contain solid particles.

Centrifugal pump used as mud pump

OGEM Solids Control SB Series centrifugal pump is used for transporting drilling mud. It can be used as feeding pump for drilling mud desander, drilling mud desilter, or used as mixing pump for Jet Mud Mixer. Also it can be used as trip pump and supercharging pump for rig mud pump.Usually, these pumps are horizontal one. They’ll be mounted on mud tanks ends or under the slant plate of shaker tank. When we set pumps under shaker tank will save much space. However, then it will be inconvenient when we repair or inspect pumps.But sometimes in solids control system there will be vertical pump or submersible slurry pump instead of horizontal pumps.

Drilling fluids flow into the shale shaker directly after it returns to the surface of the well, and the solids that are removed by the screen would be dischanged out of the tank, and the drilling fluids with smaller solids would flow through the screen into mud tank for further purification. A centrifugal pump would sucks the shaker-treated fluids up to the desilter or mud cleaner for further purification. And vertical slurry pump is used to pump the drilling fluids up to the centrifuge,and mud pump would pump the drilling fluids from mud tank into the borehole after it is treated by centrifuge.

Shale shaker is utilized in many different industries, such as coal cleaning plant, mining,

petroleum drilling, and natural gas exploitation, etc. and the shakers that are currently

used in petroleum drilling were initially introduced from the coal cleaning industry. It can

remove the solids that is over 75μm diameter. As solids over this diameter is much

harmful on the drilling fluids property. They must be removed from the drilling mud at the

first stage of solids control system. And shale shaker with API 200 mesh (75μm) is

designed and manufacutured basing on this principle.

I.  The Importance of Shale Shaker.

Shale shaker plays an important role in solids control system, and it is the most important

and earliest equipment that are used to separate the solids in the drilling fluids. It is the first

purification stage after drilling fluids return to the surface of the well, and has very strong

effect on the drilling fluids property, specially on the cost of drilling. If the shaker screen

that is to be used on the shaker is not correct, or worn, or even worse, the drilling fluids

enter into the mud tank directly, but not through the screen, the equipments at subsequent

purification stages may not work normally. This would definitely effect the drilling speed

and the cost. So the drilling team must place and utilize the shale shaker in a right way

according to the drilling mud property.

II. The Formation of Shale Shaker.

Shale shaker is consist of weled base, screen basket, screen, vibration motor, angle

adjust device, feeder, explosion-proof switch, etc. Sometime in order to treat relative big

volume drilling fluids, double or triple shale shakers are used, which two or three shakers

are combined to work together. Drilling fluids first flow into the feeder, and then flow onto

the screen. While the angle of screen basket can be adjusted -1° ~ +5° through the angle

adjust device while drilling, no need to stop the drilling process. and the vibration motor,

through driving its two pcs eccentric blocks retating, generates the vibration force on

screen basket. So according to the diference of solids vibration tracks, shale shakers are

divided into elliptical shaker, linear-motion shaker, and circular shaker.

III. The Nomenclature of Screen.

Before the new ISO standard was issued, shaker screens were named according to the

screen mesh sizes.  The screen mesh sizes means the number of mesh per one inch

length of the screen edge. At that time, most meshs are square, so this is advisable. After

the new ISO standard nomenclature was issued, the British unit was not available any

more. And also new complecated shale shakers were invented, these required the change

of the shale shaker nomentacure. Normally API 20 meshes ~ 50 meshes is considered to

be the cribble screen, and API 150 meshes ~325 meshes to be the fine screen.

Hydrocyclone desilter, mud from the bottom cyclone loss of about 2~5% economic

losses, according to the situation of production, processing a large amount of mud, the

decanter centrifuge adopt the automatic unloading continuous working style.

1)About the paint on equipments and mud tanks

We always use Japan Kansai & COSCO coating and painting. The Zink-Rich Epoxy painting. For mud tank internal, there will be 2 layers, while for outside will be 3 Layers.

2)The client required the mud system powered by generator, so there should be information on the connection.

How does the generator connect – they prefer plugged since there is no electrician required on site. How does the slurry pump connect to the unit? (again preference is forplugged) and what length of cable is supplied? How are the shakers connected? (preference again is plugged). For Above 3 questions, they are all connected by Aviation plug as we always do. It’s easy for operation. And for cable supplied for slurry pump we can provide free cable no more than 30m.

3)Moreover about all controls of the drilling mud system. All of the labels are described by clear English for easy operation just as we’ve done from beginning. We’ve exported our products to over 20 countries, we must make all of equipments globalized design.


A rather important issue. The capacity of the dirty and clean mud tanks. According to our design and client’s actual drilling situation. The dirty Mud will be 1400Gallons,while clean Mud is 2300Gallons. We recommend them to have an extra storage tank to increase total clean mud capacity.

Flexible installation for convenient transportaion

Considering the convenience on assembly and disassembly the whole mud solids control system for transportation and removal. There will be also quick connectors between Desanders, Desilter and the pipelines, the quick connectors are made of stainless steel.

Of course, it is subject to certain requirements from customer. If consider the economical cost and unnecessary removal, kindly suggest use the common flanges and pipelines connected by bolts.

They wish there is an option to run a 20m umbilical cable that provide operator control from the drillers panel. We can provide cable connect the general control cabinet but not for each single items such as only for shale shaker, mud cleaner, mud mixing pump, etc.

Option of 500GPM Mud recycling system

What are the options to increase the units treatment capacity to 500GPM?

We just need to change the mud mixing pump position and mount manner. Also the mud tank  inner dimension will be about 7.5m. This is much longer than last tank length. We kindly suggest them take mud mixing pump on a separated skid not on the tank. Or it is mounted on the storage mud tank.

And there should be both recycling mud tank and storage mud tank. For the 2 tanks they hold same outsize dimension for convenient transportation.The storage tank only for clean mud insure the maxim capacity.

The other design is the storage mud tank hold mud agitators and mud mixing pump. All the equipments including mud tank, it should be suitable for 40’ container cater to water shipment and their local transportation regulations. So the mud tanks length will not be over 8m. All of necessary pipelines and fittings will be prepared well for whole system

The necessity of vacuum degasser in drilling

In the process of drilling, drilling fluid is invaded by gas or air, density is lower, viscosity higher .Drilling fluid density lower, which leads to the hydrostatic column pressure decreases, and may cause blowout, borehole collapse, etc malignant accident.It is very dangerous that drilling fluid is invaded by gas, therefore, must take measures to deal with.

After drilling gas layer, It is possible that gas invade in drilling fluid, and shale shakerdesander, desilter and mud gunmud agitator etc could be invaded in drilling fluid by air in the work process.

Drilling fluid density is decreased obviously after gas intrusion ,but the impact on the static fluid column pressure is much smaller than people imagine.Because gas of invasion is  compressible, the density of drilling fluid  is increase gradually as the well depth.

Just according to the density of drilling fluid is lower by gas of invasion, It is very dangerous that the compound method is applied to make up for the lower density decision-making and can lead to excessive drilling fluid density, pressure formation, pollution formation.

At the same time can reduce the rate of penetration, cause lost circulation, results in the decrease of borehole liquid level, and then occur blowout.For example due to the intrusion of gas, measuring the density (the actual) is /cm3.

According to the request of balance drilling, The formation pressure of well depth will be controlled by/cm3 drilling fluid , at this time if the density of recycling system is aggravated to/cm3, it can produce two kinds of consequences, one is due to increase of density, rate of penetration decline;The second is higher about 3 Mpa than the original static fluid column pressure ,there is the risk of lost circulation.
In order to restore the density of drilling fluid , the most effective means is using vacuum degasser.
